Dropping dairy from my diet one year ago was honestly one of the best things I’ve ever done for my body. I think SoulDaddy would concur. Why? I’ve bloomed! I feel lighter, have more energy, and stopped fighting my weight. Every time I “splurge” on a good piece of pie (that’s pizza to all you non-east coast folks), I’m reminded of how much better my digestion works without cheese or milk! Like every diet, there are foods and brands that one can’t live without, and in our house, it’s Silk, specifically their Unsweetened Vanilla Almondmilk. Continue reading →
More and more people – from Bill Clinton to Beyonce to your neighbor next door – are going vegan … and staying vegan. Many of you are probably wondering why so many “regular” people – not just health freaks and die-hard animal rights activists – are taking on such a seemingly extreme diet?
And yes, my family and I are among them. I only wish I’d had this book five years ago! The interesting thing is that author Sarah Taylor became a vegan in 2002 after reading Diet for a New America by John Robbins, the same book that finally pushed me vegan after being vegetarian for nearly 20 years and SoulDaddy to give up meat and dairy!
This post is much longer than usual, but I it answers so many common questions that folks have about a plant-based lifestyle. I hope it takes away some of the mystery for you! Continue reading →
You’ve heard me talk about genetically engineered (GE), or GMO, food here many times before. It still baffles me that the U.S. government doesn’t mandate GE labeling on food. Though nearly half of states in 2013 introduced bills to require labeling – and Maine and Connecticut have recently passed laws to mandate it – we are a far cry from the rest of the world where more than 60 other nations, including France, Germany, Japan, Australia, Russia, China and the United Kingdom, require GE labeling.
So many of our family and friends are buried in more snow than they’d like these days, and I have to say, I’m a bit jealous! It’s been fairly warm here on the front range of Colorado, but unbelievably windy! We did however get a good snowfall a few weeks ago and I was so excited! I adore playing in the snow, and while K-Bear is pretty good about bundling up and going out by herself for a bit, it’s way more fun when you do it together!
Do you love to foam roll? Me too! There is something so completely addicting about it. And good thing, because until I can afford a daily massage, it’s all I’ve got! If you are new to foam rolling, interested in giving it a try or just need a little inspiration for the one collecting dust in a corner, I think this infographic will do you well. PS – I’m in the process of reviewing a new roller called the Enso Muscle Roller. It totally rocks and I can’t wait to share it with you all; stay tuned! Continue reading →
If you are unfamiliar with Wanderlust, read my review of the 2013 event here. It’s a fabulous long-weekend in a beautiful setting, featuring yoga, music, healthy food, outdoor activities and more. Plus, it’s totally family friendly; totally sweet! Definitely my kind of festival, and I’m so excited that the 2014 dates have been announced. Continue reading →
There are two things that pull on my heart strings more than anything else: animals and children. Frankly, it’s one of the biggest reasons I’ve not been able to eat animals all these years. Thankfully, our society still frowns on eating small children (insert chuckle). But I’ll never be able to understand how folks can treat their dog or cat like a family member, and still turn their head on the perils of factory-farmed animals. But I digress.
If you’re looking for ways to green your traditional Valentine’s Day chocolate, flowers, jewelry, cards and food or wine, read this. But if animals are your thing – even stuffed ones - consider this: “adopting” a real-life cuddly animal for your sweetheart instead can help spread love to abused and neglected farm animals.Continue reading →
My angel came down this week, and by angel, I mean Mom/Nana. She stayed the night, took us out to lunch and watched the girls for me so I could go to the gym two (yes, two!) days in a row, plus get my hair cut, eyebrows waxed and nails manicured.
Goodbye, winter blues; I feel like a new woman!
Yup, she’s pretty amazing. She changed my whole week for the better! So I dedicate this post to her.
When SoulDaddy and I decided to eliminate dairy from our diets, butter was one of those items we went without for a bit. Then we discovered healthy, organic alternatives and suddenly our corn-on-the-cob and homemade muffins were smiling again! I’ve had the chance to try a new one out there called Melt Organic, and it’s well-worth its hype.
Now, let me lead with this: the original spread is not vegan. It contains a trace amount of organic ghee (clarified butter) for natural flavoring. Because we are not super strict, we are ok with that, especially considering its awesome flavor, which SoulDaddy likes better than it’s competitors, i.e. Earth Balance. Continue reading →
