A Birthday Letter to Baylor

Dear Baylor,

Happy birthday, buddy! You would have been 13 today! That’s 91 in human years, and quite an accomplishment. It’s been exactly two weeks since you left this earth for your next adventure, and slowly but surely, we are learning to live life without you.

It’s tough you know. You were by my side since you were just 12 weeks old, a Border Collie/Aussie Shepard/Blue Heeler mix, young and spirited, straight off a ranch in Steamboat. Not so different from me, just 25 and full of the same crazy spirit! I’ll never forget the ride home, you sitting in my lap while I drove, me making a promise to take care of you until the day you died. I’m so happy I was able to keep that promise to you. After all you gave me, how could I not? Graduating first in your puppy class was just the start. Continue reading

2013 Garden: Seed Starting

Seeds_3Yes, it’s that time of year! There’s something so totally awesome about putting seeds in dirt and watching an entire plant grow from it, soon-to-be full (hopefully!) with beautifully ripe fruits and veggies. Love!

Early in my gardening career, I opted to purchase my vegetable plants already well on their way and ready for the ground. These days, I prefer to start them from seed myself. In addition to saving a ton of money, I have more control over the plant varieties. That means knowing each seed is organic and/or heirloom in nature.

It also gives K-Bear and I a fun project. More importantly, it teaches her the basics of where our food comes from and how we grow it, a lesson I think is lost on too many kids these days. Continue reading

My Spring into Square-Foot Gardening

GardenPests_4Ever since I was a child, I’ve loved playing in the dirt. Whether making forts in the woods with the boys across the street or weeding our family garden, I was happiest getting dirt under my finger nails.

Some things don’t change.

I’ve gardened in some capacity steadily since my late 20′s. It started with container gardening to various degrees of success and morphed into a real garden once we bought our first home (again, with success and failure via trial and error).

Last summer marked our first in our “forever” home, and I was thrilled to install three four-foot square raised beds. I’d long heard about the benefits of raised beds versus in-ground beds, and got my first taste with last year’s growing season. Continue reading

On the Moo-ve with Stonyfield: K-Bear’s 1st Day Skiing

IMG_5208SoulDaddy and I are skiers. In fact, I moved to Colorado 15 years ago specifically to ski bum live in Steamboat, and we met one day four years later while I played hooky from work in exchange for a free lift ticket at Vail. He watched me ski – and snowboard a week later – and, well, he was smitten.

So it was inevitable that we got our first child on skis quickly. The alternative - to wait until age 14, fall getting on the lift, fall getting off the lift and walk down the mountain – wasn’t an option. Or rather I wouldn’t wish my fate on anyone. Baaad memories there folks.

So last weekend when we trekked the whole fam damily, Nana and all, up to Wyoming to visit my sister, Mountain Kait, who lives just 30 minutes from Snowy Range Ski Area. Continue reading

Humane Scorecard: How did Your Legislator Vote?

Every year the Humane Society Legislative Fund creates a federal Humane Scorecard to give you a snapshot of the animal protection issues considered by the U.S. Congress. The Humane Scorecard lets you see if your legislators are voting or taking action to help protect animals.

The scorecard tracks key votes as well as co-sponsorship of important pro-animal bills. It is designed for animal advocates to assess the performance of your two U.S. Senators and your U.S. Representatives. Continue reading

6 Tips to Saving on Heating This Winter

Winter Brrr… we’ve been in a freeze here the past few weeks, as in snow from before Christmas still lingers on the ground, a rarity here on the front range of Colorado. Sure, we get plenty of sun, but once darkness falls and the temp drops even further, I find myself asking SoulDaddy all too often how soon we can move to the beach.

The irony is that I used to ski 120 days a year in the cold with never a chill. Now, I get cold just walking the dogs for 30 minutes and find myself hustling home to huddle by the fire.  Continue reading

Wanderlust Summer 2013 Dates Announced

WL2013-save-the-dates538Have you heard of Wanderlust? I hadn’t either until I came across it in Body and Soul Magazine earlier this year and got all excited - until I saw the Colorado date had passed. Boo!

But alas, Wanderlust will be back at Copper Mountain July 4-7, 2013 - as well as in Vermont (June 20-23, 2013), California (July 18-21, 2013) and Whistler (August 1-4, 2013). Full lineups will be announced in early 2013, but you can be assured they will be loaded with mountainside fun, including yoga, music, hiking, paddle board yoga, organic food and wine events, the Speakeasy lecture series, the Wanderkind kid’s program and so much more. On The Mend: My Lessons Learned from Surgery

A few months ago, I joined a team of moms with LiveWell Colorado, a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring healthy eating and active living in Colorado. Although Colorado is often touted as America’s “leanest” state, we are, unfortunately, not immune to the growing health crisis of obesity.

In fact nearly 58 percent of Colorado adults and 25 percent of our children are overweight or obese. And we’re getting worse. LiveWell Colorado was formed to take a leadership role in tackling the complex problem of obesity and realizing the vision of all Coloradans embracing a healthier lifestyle.

The LiveWell Colorado mission is right in line with my healthy living spirit, and I am proud to join a group of local moms who share a common desire to help influence healthier choices across our home state and beyond.

In the spirit of sharing, I’ve posted an article on their site that shares my holistic approach to surgical recovery. I fully credit these steps with getting me back on my feet and hitting the trails, not once, but twice. It’s an amazing journey to look back on and one that has only made me stronger.

On The Mend: My Lessons Learned from Surgery

Like many active Coloradans, I take every advantage to get outside and play. I have three bikes hanging in our garage: one for the road, one for the mountains and one for cruising with a toddler. On lazy week nights, I let our two dogs walk us around the well-worn paths near our house. On weekends, I look forward to longer family adventures.

At 37, few would guess I’ve endured two major orthopedic surgeries in less than four years. Though both grueling six-to-twelve-month-long recoveries tested me physically, mentally and emotionally, I’ve come back – even with a pregnancy tossed in! And you can, too.

Help Stop Development at Wolf Creek Ski Area

Wolf Creek Lodge is the largest building at Wolf Creek. For now. Photo by Josh CooleyThank you Primal Outdoors for bring attention to this important matter for Coloradoans, especially those of us who love to ski and ride!

The Wolf Creek Ski Area is one of Colorado’s last authentic ski areas where it’s still just about the skiing and snowboarding. The base area and surrounding forest is free of hotels, condos and restaurants; there is no Village at Wolf Creek – yet.

#Summer Lovin’

I’ve been trying to keep up with the posts this summer, but it’s tough because, well, like you, I’m out enjoying summer! There’s been lots of pool time, BBQs, camping, bike rides, hikes, and family visits. I feel fortunate that my hip – though not 100% – is fairly close, enough so that I can do all the above. I’m building up my endurance slowly, while K-Bear’s ever-curious mind enjoys every little adventure. Life is good here in Colorado, but pictures speak louder than words!  Continue reading
