Review: Ecocentric Mom April Baby Box

April Baby_1Today is a big day. Why? Because we find out the sex of baby #2! I’m nearly keeling over with excitement. Everyone is telling me it’s a boy; we shall see! How some parents can withstand the temptation of knowing whether they are having a boy or a girl I’ll never know. Forget the old-fashioned surprise; we have technology these days and I’m a planner!

Which means as soon as we know boy or girl, I’ll start trading decorating, gathering and, if need be, trading in a whole lot of pink for blue! So I was very excited to receive not one but two Ecocentric Mom boxes in the mail this week. I reviewed the Mom-to-Be Box on Wednesday; today, let’s take a look at the Baby Box.  Continue reading

Review: Ecocentric Mom April Mom-to-Be Box

April MomToBe_1Remember I was telling you last week about how I joined the Ecocentric Mom blogger team? My first boxes came Monday and they were packed full of fun!

Let’s talk first about the Mom-to-be Box. The concept in itself of getting a box of fun new things to try related to mommies and babies is enough excitement for any pregnant lady. But pack it full of all-natural, organic, cruelty-free stuff and the “wow” factor skyrockets. I found it so neat to discover new brands and companies doing great things for moms, babies and the planet! Continue reading

3 Actions to Celebrate Earth Day (Hint: They are all food related)

Source.Happy Earth Day! Did you do anything this weekend to celebrate our beautiful planet? While I think Earth Day really should be Every Day, birthdays cannot be, so we celebrate those in style. It just so happened that SoulDaddy’s special day fell over the weekend, so we made sure to let him know how special we think he is.

Think lunch downtown, homemade vegan lasagna for dinner, and this organic, vegan carrot cake for dessert. Continue reading

Thrilled to Join the Ecocentric Blogger Team!

ECM-badge-blogger (1)Every now and then, we get news that makes our day. And let me tell you that a cranky, pregnant woman needs happy news more than anyone. ;-)  So I was thrilled when Ecocentric Mom told me I’ve been chosen to join their fabulous team of bloggers!

I know many woman claim pregnancy is the most fabulous thing ever. Miracle, especially at my age, sure. But fabulous? In my book, not so much. Continue reading

How to Tell if an Egg is Still Good

Egg Test_2Eggs have always been a staple in our refrigerator, and getting through them before the question  came up ”Are they still good?” was never an issue. Until now. With our new, mostly vegan diet, those dozen eggs I pick up occasionally for SoulDaddy are sitting in the fridge longer and longer.

This morning K-Bear surprised me by asking for a Bird’s Nest for breakfast. Since the eggs were dated “Sell by March 28,” I was a bit skeptical to use them but I hate to waste. So I turned to this handy test, one I’ve read about in the past here. It’s so easy I had to pass it along! Continue reading

The Extended Plant-Based Family

Horse FamilyIn the word of plant-based eating, camaraderie is a beautiful thing. Though my own extended family has been supportive of my family’s diet over the years (thanks Mom and sister [seen at left]!), it’s always a pleasure to meet others in the world who share my same vision and passion for a meat-free and now, dairy-free, lifestyle. Holly at My Plant Based Family is one of those people!

Holly’s blog is focused on feeding her family of four a whole-foods, plant-based diet on a budget. She always has an inspiring recipe on-hand, as well as great reminder on gratitude and appreciating the simple things. My kind of gal! Continue reading

Avoiding Hexane-Extracted Soy in Meat Alternatives

As vegetarian, vegans and just plain health and environment conscious individuals, many of us opt for “meat alternatives” instead of that which came from a sad, factory-farmed, hormone and antibiotic laden animal. Think fake bacon, sausages and chicken from well-known brands such as Morningstar Farms, Boca, Tofurkey and Gardein.

Part of me thinks I’m lucky that I entered the plant-based diet well before many of these came onto the market – or at least before they blossomed into the mass retail lines they are today. Though they’ve never been a staple in my diet, I’d be lying if I said my guilty pleasure wasn’t a Tofurkey Sun-dried Tomato and Basil Italian Sausage hot off the grill drenched in pickles, onions and mustard. Or if I denied that my recent pregnancy craving was a BLT made with Morningstar Farms Bacon (extra veganaise, please!). Continue reading

Green Your Spring Clean

2013_SpringCleaningIf there’s ever a time of year to open your windows and let the fresh air in while de-cluttering closets and cleaning often overlooked places, spring is it! Unfortunately, we can’t read the labels on so-called green cleaners and trust they are eco-friendly. Therefore, similar to our bath and beauty products, we must do one of two things: (1) make our own or (2) do our research. Continue reading

Roasted Red Pepper & Olive Bruschetta

Bruschetta_6With our recent jump into a full-on plant-based diet, I was in search of a new appetizer to bring to this year’s Easter weekend celebration. Since I gravitate towards uncomplicated and healthy, I settled on this simple but delicious bruschetta. that brings together some of my favorite Mediterranean flavors. It’s easy to prep and doing so a day ahead of time really allows the flavors to meld. Continue reading
